How to select your perfect lamp

We get that it isn't always easy to choose a lamp for your bedside or console from a picture on a website. After chatting with our Marketing Manager Bianca this week — who happens to be in the market for new bedside lamps — it got us thinking. We often style our lamps to show you what they pair well with, but we rarely talk about which lamps are best used in certain parts of your home.

Tips & tricks for selecting your perfect lamp

01  /  Think scale Height matters Height affects the amount of light your lamp emits. Taller lamps suit living spaces, casting light wider than a lower lamp with a heavy shade that condenses the light's direction. Our lamp line-up below orders our range shortest to tallest to help you find the right fit.
02  /  Bulb & wattage Temperature sets the mood A warm or cool globe can make or break the ambience in a space. For a soft evening light, opt for a low-wattage warm globe; if you need extra light at a workstation, go for something cool and bright.
03  /  Task lighting Match the lamp to the job Make sure your lamp suits the task it is required for. Consider how it will be used, and how much light you need it to cast, before you look at design.
04  /  Proportion Mind the width, not just the height A lamp can be the right height but too wide for the spot. Check the shade diameter and base against the surface — on a slim bedside the shade should sit within the table's footprint rather than overhang the edge.
05  /  The shade The shade shapes the light An opaque metal shade throws a focused pool downward; linen and fabric diffuse a soft, ambient glow; opal glass lights up all around. Choose the material for the mood you're after, not only the look.
06  /  Layer your light One lamp is rarely enough Think of a lamp as one layer in the room's lighting. A pair at different heights — a tall floor lamp beside a low table or bedside lamp — creates a warmth and depth that a single overhead never will.
